Data Protection Directive - Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of individuals regarding processing of personal data and free movement of such data; the EU's main pre-GDPR instrument.
In the CIPP/E body of knowledge, Data Protection Directive comes up under Ch 1.4 - Directive 95/46/EC; Ch 18.1 - Why outsourcing matters; Ch 6.1 - Introduction.
Data Protection Directive in context
- The result was [[Directive 95/46/EC]] (the [[Data Protection Directive]]), which used [[Convention 108]] as its benchmark, covered ==both automated and manual data== and ==both public and private sectors==. (Need for a harmonised approach & the Data Protection Directive)
- The core data protection concepts pre-date the GDPR: they were set by the [[1995 Data Protection Directive]] and remain ==essentially unchanged== in the GDPR, with only limited clarifying amendments. (Introduction to Data Protection Concepts)
- These principles did not start with the GDPR: they were first set out in [[Convention 108]] (the first international legally binding data protection instrument) and were carried into the [[Data Protection Directive]]. (The Article 5 principles overview)
